The sprocket offset is different
One of the most common causes is using a sprocket with the wrong offset. Two sprockets can have the same number of teeth and bolt pattern but sit in a different position on the hub.
Most riders assume that if it bolts on, it must be correct. In reality, even a small difference in offset can throw your chain line out enough to cause premature wear or poor performance.
The sprocket is fitted the wrong way around
Some sprockets are designed to be installed with the raised centre facing a specific direction. If it's installed backwards, the chain won't line up correctly.
This is another issue we see regularly. Everything appears to fit until you spin the wheel or tension the chain, then it becomes obvious something isn't sitting where it should.
If it feels like the chain is pulling sideways instead of running straight, it's worth checking the sprocket orientation before assuming you've bought the wrong part.
You're mixing incompatible parts
Not every chain and sprocket combination works together. Different chain sizes, aftermarket hubs, cush drive conversions and wheel swaps can all affect alignment.
Even if every individual part fits, combining components from different models or brands can create alignment issues that weren't there originally.
If you've recently changed more than just the sprocket, it's worth checking the whole drivetrain rather than focusing on one part.

The rear wheel isn't aligned properly
Sometimes the sprocket isn't the problem at all. If the rear wheel is sitting slightly crooked because the axle adjusters aren't matched, the chain will naturally run out of line.
This is often the simplest fix, but it's easy to miss when you're focused on the new parts you've just installed.
How to check before buying anything
Before ordering replacement parts, take a few minutes to check the basics.
Check that your chain size matches your sprocket.
Compare the new sprocket with the original, including the offset and centre profile.
Make sure the sprocket is installed in the correct orientation.
Confirm your rear wheel alignment using the axle adjusters rather than relying on visual inspection alone.
Look for signs of the chain running to one side of the sprocket instead of sitting evenly across the teeth.
Reality check
If the chain doesn't run straight, something isn't right.
If the sprocket bolts on but the chain sits at an angle, don't ignore it. Riding with poor chain alignment can increase wear on your chain, sprockets, bearings and gearbox output shaft.
The easiest fix
If you're unsure, don't mix and match different drivetrain components unless you know they're compatible.
Matching the correct chain, front sprocket and rear sprocket helps maintain proper alignment, improves component life and saves you from having to replace worn parts again sooner than expected.
